The documentary "allows kids to offer dos and don'ts parents should follow and provides a valuable tool for families struggling to find their way." When parents divorce it is easy to become wrapped up in your own emotional and legal issue and lose sight of the stress your children are experiencing during your divorce.
We need to listen to our children and at this extremely difficult time allow them to have a voice. They aren't allowed to decide whether Mom and Dad remain together. The least we can do is allow them some control over how the family will behave and restructure during and after the divorce.
"Don't Divorce Me weaves together interviews, drawings, songs, photos and handwritten rules for parents on how to make divorce a little easier on kids. Included in these rules are such heartfelt statements as "Tell me it's not my fault," "Don't put me in the middle," "Don't take your anger out on me" and, "Respect my feelings."
I will watch, I hope you will too. And may I suggest you watch with your children. What better way to let them know it is safe to express their feelings and ask for what they need?
