Rabbi Mendel Epstein, 68, of Brooklyn is accused of running an unholy crew that charged women trapped in marital limbo $70,000 to $100,000 to strong-arm their stubborn husbands into granting a Jewish divorce known as a "get,"
According to CBS News, "Mendel Epstein, Martin Wolmark, Ariel Potash and an unknown person were reportedly arrested after the FBI raided Yeshiva Shaarei Torah in Suffern, N.Y., the home of a rabbi in Brooklyn and at least one more location in New Jersey."
This is only my opinion, not meant to offend anyone; this is an example of why no one should allow religion to dictate their lives, especially when it comes to legal matters. A Jewish woman can get a legal divorce, she can go through the divorce process the way the rest of us will or did. She can't, however get a divorce that is recognized by Jewish law unless her husband initiates and signs a "Get." A Jewish wife may begin the process of the Get by convening a rabbinical court (beit din).
A lot of men find it difficult to deal with orders of secular courts during and after divorce. Rabbi Epstein's religious court sure goes a long way in making our Family Court judges look tame.
That's some heavy duty "make him an offer he can't refuse," religious law enforcement.
