Debt Settlement and The IRS

By Cathy Meyer, About.com

Debt Settlement and The IRS

H and his ex spouse settled with credit card companies while going through divorce. They paid less than the balance due on the accounts and now the IRS has come calling.

Question:

When my ex and I divorced 3 years ago we negotiated with a couple of credit card companies to pay off less than the balance owed on our accounts. I’m now being told my the IRS that I owe money on the portion we weren’t able to pay. This doesn’t seem fair and I don’t understand why my attorney or the credit card company didn’t tell me this would happen. Is there anything I can do about it?
