What do Marriage Counselors Do?

By , About.com Guide

Question: What do Marriage Counselors Do?
Answer:

Marriage Counselors work with married couples to either help them handle marital discord or enhance the marital relationship. Marriage counselors are schooled in teaching couples conflict resolution skills and communication skills.

A marriage counselor will begin working with the couple together but may eventually work with each individually. Doing this allows each spouse to feel comfortable about opening up and sharing their feelings with the marriage counselor.

A person must have a bachelor’s and master’s degree before becoming a marriage counselor. States require individuals who wish to counsel others to take a “licensure exam” before opening and legally practicing as a marriage counselor.
