Attachment Defined

By Cathy Meyer, About.com

Definition: A lien on personal or real property created by a court order in response to a motion for attachment. To preserve marital assets the court may attach property owed by the divorcing couple. If the home, automobiles or any other major property is in the name of one spouse alone a lien in the form of an attachment will keep the owner from selling the property before the courts can divide it.
