How many years were you married?
We were married 31 years.
Did you want a divorce?
No
Describe the break-up of your marriage.
I was in the middle of treatment for breast cancer when my husband of 31 years came to me and said, "I have not been happy for a long time and I am going to be leaving. You've had chemo and you will be fine." I had just had reconstruction surgery 5 days prior. Our youngest daughter had just gone off to college. I was alone and scared.
What helped you cope with your divorce?
Ativan. Seriously....and an incredible group of friends. I did need to spend some time alone, at the beginning. I was pretty much in shock and needed to process everything. My friends were very concerned and tried to get me to go out for dinner, etc. but I needed to take take the time to heal. I went into therapy twice a week.
Lessons Learned
- I guess I would say...when spending time with the attorney/attorneys, have someone you trust with you. I wasn't in a good state of mind to make decisions and as a result, I made some mistakes.
- Don't send caustic emails.
- Get into some kind of therapy.
